Seek His Face

“The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love and he will rejoice over you with singing.”  Zephaniah 3:17

Have you ever heard God sing?  He must have a voice more beautiful than an angel!   To hear it would take great silence and waiting on Him.   If you are still and hear God's voice,  what will you hear?  You will hear him loving you, singing and rejoicing over you, affirming you and giving you direction for your life. Nothing could be sweeter than the communion that two friends have when they come together with so much in common. Nothing can be more precious than the special times a parent spends with their child. Imagine the Father's joy when you spend time together in each other's company.

“Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

God’s people are commanded to “be still” in this verse. It is part of our responsibility to our covenant with God.  In the Old Testament it was for Israel and still is, and today, it is also given to Christians . Galatians 3:26-29).

The word “be still in Hebrew means raphah.  It refers that which has been let go without conviction or also to be disheartened or weak.

In this particular passage, to be still is referring to being weak.  Here is the irony in this term “be still.” While we will have our responsibilities we will always face challenges in this temporal world. Even though we can take initiative to see our responsibilities through, it does not say that we do not need to rely on God. (James 4:13-17).
This command — “be still” — causes us to think of how limited and finite we are, and that God is so infinite. In light of this, since He is so infinite, we need to drop our hands, go limp, relax, and “chill out.” We need to “come, behold the works of Jehovah,” as it says in verse 8 so that we can  enjoy a calm confidence in God.
“Shall he not also with him freely give us all things?” Paul reasoned (Romans 8:32). Psalm 46:10 encourages us to reflect on what God can do in the face of what we are unable to do.  This “stillness” that God commands, does not come from a worry free, trouble free life.  It comes from a deep and steady flow of reflection on the ways of God and his intervention on behalf of His people ( Romans 15:4).

It seems that my world and your world is changing and falling apart and so we are encouraged not to waiver in our faith simply because we have taken time to be still and know our God.

In this temporal world that tosses and turns, He is a sure foundation.  We need to stay tuned in to His voice at all times.  Sometimes in this busy and noisy world, silence can be an irritating sound. The kind of silence I'm talking about is the kind that you find when you just shut down the world around you and quiet yourself to think.   We can get so busy that we forget to contemplate and listen. Therefore we can miss valuable opportunities God has for us, and miss the blessings He has for us too.  Wow! We are on a journey and yet if we don't quiet ourselves to hear from Him, we can miss wonderful opportunities and blessings that we could receive while on our journey. This is quite profound and startling to me.   It makes me want to stop and evaluate things right now to determine whether I'm really listening or not. What about you?

In this world, silence and quietness can be lonely.  At first it may feel like a desert, dry and without life. When we take time to quiet ourselves, eventually that desert turns into a beautiful garden where you and God walk together in fellowship and communion.  It will flourish with beauty as you grow in who God has called you to be.  Each day we need to stop filling our lives with busyness that is just emptiness in disguise. Saying “no” to some commitments will free up necessary time. This is time that should not be sacrificed even when there are important things to attend to. Nothing is more important than that moment you need to take and quiet yourself before God, worship Him and have conversation in His presence.  During the remainder of the 40 days, it is important to continue in this way with humbleness as well as a broken and contrite heart. You will find chains break off. New victories and liberties will be found to know Him and serve Him in a greater capacity. You will see yourself through His eyes. A beautiful sight.

PRAYER:
Lord, help me to be sensitive to your voice. I want to hear you when you call me so that I can learn from you, fellowship in your presence and know your will for my life.  Help me to break away from busyness and help me turn to you so that I will see all that you have for me that I may serve you in a greater way.   I worship you and give you priority in my quiet times and my busy times.  Teach me to be still and recognize you for who you are in my life. God of power and of love, beyond all majesty and kings. In Jesus' Name, Amen
