Maria Morano ’24 is living her dream as a labor and delivery nurse at NewYork-Presbyterian Alexandra Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns.

As a graduate of the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences, Morano is dedicated to delivering patient-centered care and embracing the challenges of the nursing profession – a calling shaped by a transformative service trip to Ghana.

“Iona’s nursing program traveled to Ghana last February, where I got the opportunity to see how health care differs across the world,” she said. “It was an amazing experience that allowed me to see how personal the care they deliver in Ghana truly is. The opportunity is something I will be forever grateful for.”

In fact, it was her hands-on learning experience abroad that played a key role in helping Morano land a full-time position with NewYork-Presbyterian upon graduation.

“Iona prepared me for the real-world challenges of nursing,” said the New Rochelle, N.Y., native. “The nursing program not only taught me the technical skills I needed, but it also gave me the compassion and empathy to truly care for my patients. I think my time at Iona gave me the confidence to face any challenge that comes my way.”

A Premier New School

Established July 2021, the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences offers a new vision for collaborative health care education, modern workforce development and community engagement. The school’s flagship building is the Kelly Center for Health Sciences, a state-of-the-art facility located on Iona’s new 28-acre Bronxville campus.

By collaborating with one of the nation’s top hospitals, Iona is able to provide students with unparalleled access to clinical placements and full-time career opportunities after graduation.

Reflecting on her experience, Morano said serving as a nurse has been a great privilege.

“I love that nursing, no matter the situation, allows somebody to show up for you and give you strength on your weakest days,” she said. “It’s an example of how kind the world can be.”

Her advice to current students?

“I promise you, it's all worth it. The journey may be tough, but it shapes you into the nurse you’re meant to be, and there’s nothing more rewarding than knowing you’ve made a difference in someone’s life.”
