March 27, 2026

Dr. Vanda Seward '01MS began her Iona journey as an adult learner, balancing classes, raising a family and working full-time. Today, she is a criminologist, researcher and author serving as director of the Criminal Justice Program and professor of criminal justice at CUNY's Kingsborough Community College. With experience spanning frontline public service, senior state leadership and academic instruction, her career reflects what becomes possible when lived experience meets rigorous education.

Seward earned her Master of Science in Criminal Justice in 2001, a milestone she credits with reshaping not just her career, but her entire sense of possibility. She recently released a memoir, “This Wasn't Supposed to Be My Story,” chronicling her journey through the criminal legal system.

What do you love most about what you’re currently doing?
What I love most about what I do is the ability to turn lived experience into something that has purpose. Whether I’m teaching, writing, or working in policy spaces, I’m able to connect people to the human side of systems and help them see possibilities where there were once limitations or a lack of desire.

Why did you decide to study Criminal Justice?
I decided to study criminal justice because my life and work had already been shaped by the system long before I entered the classroom. As a young Black woman and teenage mother, I saw firsthand how deeply the criminal legal system affects families and communities. When I began working inside the system, I realized that experience alone was not enough. I wanted the tools, language, and credentials to understand how decisions were made and how change could be influenced from within. Studying criminal justice allowed me to connect lived experience with policy, theory, and practice in meaningful ways.

What advice do you have for current Iona students?
Take your education seriously, but don’t believe there is only one “right” timeline. Your path does not have to be linear to be meaningful. Use your time at Iona to build strong writing, critical thinking, and analytical skills, which will carry you further than any single job title. Seek out mentors, stay curious, and be willing to do the work both inside and outside the classroom. Most importantly, trust that growth often happens over time. Consistency, integrity, and purpose matter more than speed.

What’s your fondest Iona memory?
One of my fondest memories at Iona came from my criminal law class, taught by a sitting Westchester County judge. On the very first day, he told us that, “if we came to the class expecting to hear fifteen-syllable words, then we were in the wrong place.” He believed that speaking clearly and simply was the best way to ensure everyone understood the law. That lesson stayed with me. More than twenty-five years later, I still share it with my students. We write for the reader, and we speak for the listener. Clarity is not a lack of depth—it is a sign of respect.

How did Iona prepare you for where you are today?
Earning my degree from Iona was a pivotal accomplishment that opened my eyes to the full range of possibilities available to me. It strengthened my confidence, sharpened my critical thinking and writing skills, and affirmed that my lived experience had value in academic and professional spaces. That foundation propelled my career in criminal justice, leading to senior leadership roles focused on public safety and reentry.

Since graduating from Iona, Seward went on to earn a Master of Arts in Journalism from City University of New York Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism and a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Capella University. She served as executive director of the Kings County District Attorney's ComALERT program and statewide director of Reentry Services for the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision before retiring from the Kings County District Attorney's Office, where she led the County Reentry Task Force.

ABOUT IONA
Founded in 1940, Iona University is a master's-granting private, Catholic, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers. In addition, The Princeton Review once again named Iona to its “Best Business Schools for 2025,” recognizing both its on-campus and online MBA programs. A school on the rise, Iona officially changed its status from College to University on July 1, 2022, reflecting the growth of its academic programs and the prestige of an Iona education.

For Rebecca Bittner, a Media & Strategic Communication major expected to graduate in May 2028, the Olympics marked a defining early chapter in her professional journey. Serving as an intern within NBC Sports’ immersion program, Bittner worked in digital ad commerce, streaming exclusive events across Peacock and NBC platforms while inserting advertising pods into live coverage.

“This experience was truly one of a kind,” Bittner said. “I was able to push myself and learn about thriving in a professional environment.

For Bittner, the experience was not only an opportunity to bolster her resume; it provided firsthand exposure to the world of sports broadcasting — providing practical experience and preparation to succeed in her career.

“It felt surreal that I was able to contribute and do my part during the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics,” Bittner said. “All while representing Iona University and the type of students we pride ourselves on being."

Chernoh Jalloh ’25MA: Bringing the Games to Life

Just one year after earning his master’s degree in Sports Communication & Media, Chernoh Jalloh ’25MA helped power NBC’s Olympic curling coverage as a freelance production assistant.

Throughout the Games, Jalloh organized, tagged and managed broadcast footage of curling events, logging and time-coding commentator audio to support editors and producers. He also assisted with real-time asset retrieval, helping ensure smooth live and post-production workflows.

“Working the Winter Olympics was a life-changing experience,” Jalloh said. “It proved that the stories I once watched on TV were now the stages I help bring to life — from every sweep, every call and every stone.”

Nico Laveris ’23MA: Shaping the Story of Freestyle Skiing

As an associate producer at NBC Sports, Nico Laveris ’23MA served as edit producer for freestyle skiing, covering aerials and moguls.

In his role, Laveris produced short-form content for both daytime and primetime broadcasts across NBC platforms, crafting everything from quick-turn highlight packages to in-depth athlete features that captured the personal journeys behind the performances.

“Covering the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics was an unforgettable milestone for me,” Laveris said. “Whether building momentum heading into a final run or delivering emotional depth in a feature piece, I was proud to produce content that elevated the viewer experience. Being part of such a globally celebrated event and collaborating with an incredibly talented team made this chapter of my career especially meaningful. It was truly a rewarding experience that I will carry with me for years to come.”

Gus Ramirez ’17, ’19MBA: Powering the Streaming Experience

For Gus Ramirez ’17, ’19MBA, the Milano Cortina Games marked his third Olympics with NBC. As an L2 Digital Operator on the NBC Sports streaming team, Ramirez helped run Peacock’s morning edition of NBC’s daily “Gold Zone” show.

Working as master controller, he oversaw prechecks for video, audio and graphics, coordinating closely with the production team to ensure the show ran smoothly for viewers streaming at home.

“This was my third Olympics,” Ramirez said. “It is always rewarding knowing that thousands of people are watching my work on Peacock and knowing that I am contributing the best work that I can. It is very tiring work for those two weeks but always rewarding once we get to the closing ceremony.”

Allen Pines ’21MA: From Digital Operator to Emmy Winner

Allen Pines ’21MA brought experience from four Olympic Games — Tokyo, Beijing, Paris and now Milan Cortina — to his current role as associate technical product owner at NBC.

Earlier in his career, Pines worked as a digital operator, assisting in launching and running live event streams for Peacock and the NBC App, monitoring events and escalating technical issues in real time. For Milan Cortina, he transitioned into a leadership-focused role, helping manage and enhance the tools the digital team uses to deliver those same streams successfully.

“While this past Olympics I got to work from home, the hustle and bustle of the 24/7 environment, while also living in a hotel in Stamford for the run of the games was a real grind, which I consider some of the best team building and overall accomplishments I can claim,” Pines said. “Our team was even awarded Sports Emmys for the Paris games, which now makes me an Emmy winner. I look forward to future Olympic events.”

From students gaining hands-on experience to alumni advancing in the industry, Gaels continue to make an impact in the professional world. Their work surrounding the 2026 Winter Olympic Games highlights the career readiness Iona students build — and the value of an education rooted in real-world opportunity.

 March 9, 2026

After starting her career in education, Stephanie Castro '21MBA decided it was time for a pivot—and she found her fit at Iona University, where she earned her Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Financial Management in 2021.

Since then, Castro has built a successful career pursuing her passion for audit, technology and cybersecurity. She is currently an accounting manager at PetVet Care Centers, and recently was recognized by Influential Women as one of the Most Influential Women of 2025 for her previous work as a senior associate at PwC.

“I’m proud to represent Iona University as an alumna and passionate about empowering women in audit and tech and leading with purpose, integrity, and resilience,” Castro shared. “Iona provided the academic foundation and a supportive, values-driven community that encouraged ethical leadership.”

Learn more about Stephanie Castro

What do you love most about what you’re currently doing?

I love working in audit, technology and cybersecurity, where the work is evolving and intellectually challenging. I enjoy helping organizations strengthen their control environments and navigate risk with clarity, while translating complex issues into insights that business leaders can act on. I find fulfillment in mentoring others - especially women and early-career professionals - and creating space for growth and purpose.

Why did you decide to study Finance Management?

After spending years in the education field, I realized I wanted to deepen my business and financial expertise and create a broader impact at an organizational level. Earning my MBA gave me the foundation to pivot into audit and compliance, where I could combine analytical thinking with problem-solving, governance and risk management. It allowed me to build on communication, leadership and empathy skills while opening the door to a dynamic field in business, technology and accountability.

How did Iona prepare you for where you are today?

Iona gave me the confidence to pivot and lead with purpose. Academically, the MBA program strengthened my analytical, financial and strategic thinking, which became the foundation for my transition into audit, risk and compliance. The curriculum emphasized real-world application, ethical decision-making and accountability—skills I rely on daily when evaluating controls, managing risk and advising leadership. The supportive community and mission-driven culture encouraged me to trust my path and embrace challenges.

What advice do you have for current Iona students?

Embrace a non-linear path and don’t be afraid to pivot - seek out stretch opportunities early, especially those that challenge your confidence or expose you to new areas. Take advantage of Iona’s community by building relationships with professors, alumni and peers. Find mentors and be willing to mentor others as you grow. Finally, protect your well-being and define success on your own terms. A sustainable, purpose-driven career is built on continuous learning, balance and the courage to say yes to opportunities that push you forward.

What’s your fondest Iona memory?

My fondest Iona memory is the sense of community I experienced. Collaborating with my peers, learning from diverse perspectives and studying together not only strengthened my technical skills but also reinforced the value of collaboration, adaptability and shared resilience. That experience truly shaped how I learn, lead and work with others today.

What motivates you to give back to Iona?

Iona helped me redefine my career path and believe in my ability to pivot and grow. Giving back is a way to pay it forward - by supporting students who may be navigating uncertainty, non-traditional paths, or major transitions, just as I once did. I’m especially motivated to help students see that success isn’t linear and that with mentorship and perseverance, they can build meaningful and impactful careers.

Bilingual Care, Universal Impact: How Jaridy Fabré ’17MA is Transforming Pediatric Therapy

 February 9, 2026

Jaridy Fabré ’17MA is the founder and CEO of Somos Bilingües, a pediatric multidisciplinary clinic and sensory gym in Dobbs Ferry that is recognized for its bilingual therapy and evaluation practices. Founded on the belief that all children deserve culturally responsive services, Somos Bilingües now brings together a diverse, multidisciplinary team committed to elevating the way special education and pediatric health care meet the needs of bilingual and bicultural families.

Fabré built Somos Bilingües to address gaps in assessment tools and clinical approaches for culturally diverse children and the over-identification of marginalized groups in special education. Today, her team includes more than 60 specialists, including speech, occupational and physical therapists, psychologists, special educators and social workers.

Somos Bilingües provides holistic, culturally and linguistically responsive assessment and treatment for children of all abilities. Although the clinic began as a bilingual specialty, Fabré realized that holistic care benefits all children, not just bilingual learners, and each deserves care that honors their unique culture, strengths and needs. Local and international families have sought support from Somos Bilingues to find answers and understand their child- beyond standardized testing.

Giving back to the community is central to Fabré’s mission. She recently donated Dobbs Ferry’s first playground communication board in Gould Park to promote inclusion and foster independence for children. For Fabré, the gesture was “a full circle moment,” reflecting on the support she received as a graduate student at Iona while earning her master’s degree in Communication Sciences & Disorders.

Learn More About Jaridy

What do you love most about what you're currently doing?

What I love most is creating safe, welcoming spaces where children, families and clinicians feel seen and understood. Our field hasn’t always reflected the diversity of the communities we serve. This can limit access for bilingual learners and discourage diverse therapists from entering the profession. Drawing on the education and mentorship I gained at Iona, I focus on strengthening culturally and linguistically responsive practice and supporting clinicians of all backgrounds. This improves access to services in a child’s home language, ensures more accurate diagnoses and reduces over-identification in special education. It’s deeply rewarding to help clinicians grow while watching children thrive.

How did Iona prepare you for where you are today, personally and/or professionally?

Iona gave me a strong academic foundation and the grit to build what didn’t exist yet. My path wasn’t perfect, but navigating challenges taught me to advocate for myself, seek mentors and create opportunities beyond the classroom—skills I now use every day to grow an inclusive practice. The emphasis on service and community shaped my commitment to culturally and linguistically responsive care. Coursework sharpened my clinical thinking and writing, while small classes and campus leadership roles strengthened my communication, team building and problem-solving—critical for leading clinicians and partnering with families and schools.

What advice do you have for a current Iona student who wants to follow a similar path?

If you want to follow this path, practice turning gaps into opportunities. Identify the unmet needs that energize your advocacy—that’s where you’ll find your purpose.

Learn more: Somos Bilingues Website

Instagram: Somos Bilingues Instagram

A Career Pivot and Entrepreneurial Journey Brings Iona Alumnus Full Circle – Back to Campus

 October 1, 2025

After graduating from Iona University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance, Mark Saracino '05 dove head-first into a fast-paced career on Wall Street. While building his expertise in finance and commodities, Saracino nurtured a side hustle and passion project: founding Saracino Industries Inc., a boutique brokerage firm specializing in natural stone products for construction.

For over 13 years, he balanced his demanding role in the finance sector with steadily growing his venture. In a bold leap, Saracino eventually stepped away from Wall Street to lead Saracino Industries full-time, transforming it into a leading stone supplier serving the Northeast and beyond, with a specialized focus on supplying material to large-scale construction projects across the public and private sectors.

In 2021, this entrepreneurial path brought Saracino full circle, returning him to Iona's campus to collaborate closely with architects, construction managers and University leaders on the transformative Murphy Green project.

“My favorite projects are the ones that bring me back to my roots,” said Saracino. “To be able to leave a lasting mark on the campus that helped launch my journey is something I’ll always carry with deep gratitude.”

Saracino Industries sourced and delivered premium stone materials that now define the stunning 30,000-square-foot green space at the heart of campus – a vibrant hub where students gather daily. From the elegant retaining walls and staircases to the amphitheater seating on East Hill, Saracino proudly etched his legacy into the landscape through enduring natural stone.

Highlights include the multi-color granite cladding, meticulously blended from four New England quarries, and a custom-engraved 48-inch-diameter granite inset featuring the University's seal – a true centerpiece of the project. The custom carved work was made possible through Saracino Monument Co., a subsidiary of Saracino Industries that brings artistic creation and elite custom fabrication to the cemetery memorial industry.

Reflecting on his Iona days, Saracino recalls daydreaming about someday leading his own enterprise, though he never imagined it would involve the stone and construction world. The foundational finance lessons at the LaPenta School of Business, however, equipped him with the acumen to turn vision into reality.

“My four years at Iona gave me the strategic problem-solving skills I needed to turn my entrepreneurial ideas into reality. The faculty brought a wide range of real-world experiences into the classroom, which made the learning deeply practical. One professor who left a lasting impression was Dr. Jeffry Haber, my first-year accounting instructor. While he was a CPA by profession, what fascinated me most was his success as the owner of several laundromats – a side venture he spoke about candidly. That always stuck with me. It’s a reminder that a college major doesn’t have to dictate one’s every move, professionally – and that there is always room to take chances and carve your own unique path.”

That mindset is what drove Saracino to nurture his passion to create something bigger.

“I love the tangible impact of my work – whether it’s seeing our stone transform universities or city parks; being used to build new bridges and infrastructure in and around the Tri-State area; or being placed as eternal cemetery monuments to honor a family’s loved one. Natural stone is one of the very few products in this world that is truly everlasting, to be witnessed, enjoyed and cherished for multiple generations.”

Today, as president and CEO of Saracino Industries and Saracino Monument Co., Saracino also serves his community part-time as an elected councilman in the Town of Mount Pleasant, N.Y., his lifelong hometown. In addition, Saracino volunteered for over eight years as an executive board member with the Mt. Pleasant Education Foundation, a local non-profit charitable organization that supports local schools in Hawthorne and Thornwood. He resides in Valhalla, N.Y., with his wife, Dawn, and their two children, Nicolas and Alessandra.

More Than a Business: Jen Ritz ’08 Leads with Purpose“Owning a successful business is one thing, but using it as a way to help others Fight the Good Fight for their own cause is more than I could have imagined.“

 August 18, 2025

Jen Ritz ’08 is the owner of Sweet Tees Custom Apparel Inc. in her hometown of Yorktown Heights, N.Y. She was recently recognized with a New York State Commendation Award, recognizing her significant impact on the local community, and a New York State Empire Award, acknowledging her philanthropic efforts through her business. As a former member of Iona women’s basketball and a graduate with bachelor’s degrees in English and Communications, Ritz continues to use her platform and business to uplift others and give back.

Philanthropy and Community Impact

“In 2013, I helped launch a fundraising effort called Jason's Army in honor of Jason Needle with a goal of giving back to the community who supported him during his battle with cancer. I bought my first screen printing equipment as a way to make fundraising t-shirts. Jason's Army grew over time and went on to raise over $100,000 and, to date, has granted eight wishes with Make-a-Wish Hudson Valley. Sweet Tees was officially born in 2015 and now serves communities throughout the tristate area. We often host free online stores to raise money through apparel sales for various organizations. In 2024, Sweet Tees gave back over $15,000 to schools, sports teams, and charitable causes throughout the Hudson Valley.

I donated to the women's basketball team most recently on Gaels Giving Day. I know Coach Ang's goal was to raise funds towards their new locker room. I loved that goal because, as a player, you spend a lot of time in there. You want it to be a comfortable place where players want to be.”

Learn more about Jen Ritz

What do you love most about what you’re currently doing?
All my life, one of my favorite things was getting swag from events I went to. Whether it was catching a t-shirt thrown by a cheerleader at a game or getting a free water bottle after running a 5K. My favorite thing about what I do now is I get to create that excitement for my clients whether it's a team, school, business, or event. Sweet Tees is a full-service shop offering all types of printed apparel and more.

How did Iona prepare you for your career?
Iona always felt like home to me and still does. Playing basketball and traveling with the team was one of the best experiences of my life. I think what stuck with me the most, though, is as a student-athlete we learned to balance many things at once. Between workouts, classes, games, and traveling, our schedules were packed. This has definitely translated to being a business owner and the level of multitasking that is required of me.

What advice would you give to a student?
I took a lot of different paths before landing where I am today – take classes that interest you and do your best in them. We have a vast alumni network and a passionate one at that! Get to know the people in school with you as well as alumni. These relationships are the ones that will help you no matter what your career path ends up being.

What’s your fondest Iona memory?
Iona brought me all over the world. I've been inside the Colosseum in Rome and outside of Buckingham Palace in London. I went surfing for the first time on Waikiki Beach. I've stood on the football field at Notre Dame. So many of my best memories are because of Iona Women's Basketball.

 July 16, 2025

“What I learned at Iona , and especially through my experience on the rowing team, taught me the power of strong relationships, trust and teamwork,” said Kayla Kennelly ’11, newly appointed Chief Growth Officer at Opal Wealth Advisors. “Iona taught me the importance of collaboration, leadership and service, which continue to guide me today.”

In her new role, Kennelly leads strategic initiatives focused on brand expansion, advisor development and client experience. She credits this milestone to both Opal Wealth Advisors and Iona University, viewing this achievement as a reflection of the firm’s momentum and the strength of the network that has supported her journey.

“This is an exciting new chapter for me,” Kennelly said. “It’s the first time I’ve stepped into a true leadership role, which has been a personal goal for a long time. I’m proud to be helping build something with real impact and grateful for the people and places that helped me get here.”

Kennelly earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics from Iona in 2011, and has since built nearly 15 years of experience across fintech, custody and RIA advisory platforms. Before joining Opal Wealth Advisors, Kennelly was a senior business development leader at Goldman Sachs Advisor Solutions and held roles at Facet Wealth and Pershing Advisor Solutions.

With a passion for entrepreneurship and mentorship, Kennelly launched a reverse mentoring program at Pershing to connect rising talent with senior leadership, fostering cross-generational learning. She also co-led an "Adopt-a-School" financial literacy initiative alongside Pershing’s CEO, partnering with local schools to deliver hands-on financial education to underserved students.

Beyond wealth management, she and her husband are the founders of Vino on Wheels, an innovative mobile bar company serving private events across New Jersey.

Learn More about Kayla Kennelly

What do you love most about what you’re currently doing?
I love being in an entrepreneurial environment where I can have a real impact on clients' lives. Over the years, I’ve realized I thrive when I’m building something from the ground up. I’m all about creating, scaling and making a difference, and this role really lets me do that.

Why did you decide to study your particular major?
I chose to study finance because I honestly wish I had learned about money and financial decisions way earlier in life. Growing up, there were things I didn’t fully understand, and I wanted to change that for myself and for others. I’ve always liked helping people and finance felt like a way to make a real difference. Moving from Minnesota to New York was a big change, but I knew I wanted to be in the center of it all. This is where the opportunities are and I was excited to jump in and learn as much as I could.

How did Iona prepare you for where you are today?
Iona gave me a foundation that went way beyond the classroom. Being part of the Women’s Rowing team, in particular, taught me so much about teamwork, discipline and showing up for others, which still shapes how I lead and collaborate today. I also got my very first job at Pershing, which launched my career, from a career fair at Iona, which shows just how supportive and connected the community is.

What advice do you have current Iona students?
What you’re learning at Iona is important and be mindful that companies are hiring just as much for your work ethic, creativity and outside interests. If you’re smart and driven, you can be taught almost anything. So be curious, stay humble and say yes to opportunities that stretch you. Relationships will be your greatest asset, so build them with intention. And remember, how you show up matters.

ABOUT IONA
Founded in 1940, Iona University is a master's-granting private, Catholic, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers.
Iona Alumnus William May ’12, ’13MS Helps Build a More Secure Digital Future“I always had a love for math and computers, but I didn't know where these passions would lead me. Choosing to pursue both has shaped my career in ways I never imagined.”

 May 23, 2025

William May ’12, ’13MS is a senior software engineer at Beyond Identity, bringing over a decade of expertise in mobile application development. With a drive to take on the unique challenges of developing applications for an open-source platform with a diverse ecosystem of devices, May is passionate about learning new strategies to solve problems.

A Yonkers native, May earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science and mathematics, followed by a Master of Science in computer science. During his time at Iona, May was involved in Campus Ministry, the Computer Science Club, the Student Government Association, and the Mathematics Society, to name a few.

Learn More about William May

How did Iona prepare you for your career?
I am pleased to see how the Computer Science department has grown! The Game Development and Cyber Security programs did not yet exist in my time as an undergraduate student, yet Iona gave me the building blocks to be able to do both in my career. I was able to get an internship at IBM and after graduation, I landed a job as an Android developer, then moved on to game development, and eventually entered into the field of cyber security.

What do you love most about what you’re currently doing?
When I got into mobile software development, I wanted to help build things that are helpful and useful to people, not just build another app that takes up space. I am working to help eliminate and replace passwords with secure, phishing-resistant authentication. It has been a great learning experience to explore how other operating systems, programming languages and technologies work, and how to secure them.

What advice would you give to a student?
Growing up, I considered game development and cyber security, and I'm blessed to have been able to do both in my career. I never imagined I actually would. I would encourage students to talk to their professors; they can be invaluable in helping you navigate your career path. Also, don't just go to class!
