New Rochelle and Bronxville, N.Y. – Iona University President Seamus Carey, Ph.D., has been recognized in the 2024 PoliticsNY & amNY Metro Power Players in Education. Released today, the list celebrates leaders who are “at the forefront of shaping New York’s education landscape and guiding students towards a bright future.”

The publication notes that since becoming the ninth president of Iona University on July 1, 2019, Carey has been a driving force in higher education. Known for his visionary leadership, Carey has propelled institutional growth and expanded opportunities for students.

Highlights include acquiring a 28-acre campus in Bronxville, N.Y., launching the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences, and enhancing programs in athletics, performing arts and study abroad. Carey’s leadership is also firmly rooted in Iona’s mission of faith and service.

Asked how policymakers can support New York’s students and educators, Carey answered: “It is important for policymakers to recognize that the role of higher education extends far beyond job preparation, particularly as artificial intelligence reshapes the value and nature not just of work, but of knowledge itself.”

“Supporting New York’s students and educators means recognizing and valuing the transformative power of education, not just as a pathway to employment, but as a holistic process that cultivates informed citizens prepared for civic and social leadership.”

Reflecting on a favorite experience from his own education, Carey said it was his Vassar College professor, Dr. Michael McCarthy, who inspired him to pursue philosophy and thereby changed his life.

“As a first-generation college student, seeing him live the values he discussed and taught was transformative,” Carey said. “It also introduced me to the thinkers who asked the essential questions required for living a meaningful life, giving me the confidence to pursue lines of thinking that would become instrumental in shaping my path ahead.”

 September 15, 2023

New Rochelle, N.Y. – To whom much is given, much is required. For two-time NBA All-Star Allan Houston and his wife, Tammi, that Bible verse provides powerful words to live by.

“It was always bigger than basketball. I knew that I had talent, but I was always taught that the talent was for a bigger reason and purpose,” the former Knicks shooting guard said Wednesday night. “Life is perspective. It’s not what happens to you, it’s how you perceive it and what you do with it and how you move forward from it that matters. You win first from within. The scores and the trophies and everything that comes after is all from your preparation.”

Speaking to a crowd of students, faculty and staff in Thomas J. Burke Lounge at Iona University, the Houstons shared words of wisdom about their personal and professional journeys, including parenting seven children as well as launching a social impact brand, FISLL.

Named after the five fundamentals that inspired Allan Houston on the court and in life, FISLL emphasizes the importance of faith, integrity, sacrifice, leadership and legacy.

“I was on the plane one day and I just wrote down those five words,” Allan Houston said. “Faith is a big part of our identity. I am always listening to my spirit, listening to God’s voice. I encourage you all to take quiet time and just listen, just reflect. Because it’s in those quiet moments that you receive the most power.”

“You are going to learn a lot of information from your professors and your classrooms,” he added. “But wisdom comes from God. And it comes from how you apply that information you’re going to get.”

Sharing stories from the NBA sprinkled in with laughs about parenting and deep truths about trust, faith and so much more, the Houstons kept the room captivated by their clear and passionate insights into success and leadership.

“What he’s telling you, he has lived,” Tammi Houston said. “They say walk the talk. But I want you to know – this talk, we have walked it. Whatever you put your mind to, you have to put your mind into doing it well. You have to have the highest standard for yourself. Otherwise, why do it?”

Alison Munsch, Ph.D. , Iona’s chief officer of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, organized the opportunity and led the discussion. Her thoughtful questions helped to guide the conversation toward key takeaways that people could apply toward success in their own lives. There were countless nuggets of wisdom throughout the fireside chat.

“Your life is an opportunity to lead where you stand. It becomes a lifestyle,” Tammi Houston said. “When you know you’re a winner, you’re going to act like a winner, you’re going to lead like a winner, you’re going to show up like a winner. Actions always speak louder than words.”

“You have to have a desire to get better every single day. We don’t know what the future is going to look like, but we can show up today,” Allan Houston said. “The question I want to start and end with is this: How do you want to show up?”

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano took the opportunity to declare it “Iona University Day,” presenting a proclamation to Iona officials and thanking the University for educating so many of the city’s students.

Campus Enhancements

Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, today Iona has two picturesque campuses in New Rochelle and Bronxville, N.Y. Both are located just 20 minutes north of Midtown Manhattan.

Iona's 45-acre campus in New Rochelle has seen several notable capital improvements in recent years, including the construction of a new residence hall on North Avenue; the complete renovation of the Hynes Athletics Center Arena; the construction of the Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation; and the addition of a new green space in the heart of campus known as the Murphy Green.

Notably, in January 2020, Iona also cut the ribbon on a completely renovated LaPenta School of Business, nearly doubling the academic space available to students.

Meanwhile, in May 2021, Iona acquired a new 28-acre campus in Bronxville, formerly belonging to Concordia College. Iona’s Bronxville campus is now home to the state-of-the-art Kelly Center for Health Sciences, the flagship building of the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences.

Driven in part by these campus enhancements along with new academic programs, degrees and extracurricular activities, Iona’s new student enrollment is up nearly 30 percent since 2019. This fall, Iona will welcome its largest freshman class in five years.

Notably, while Iona previously had been known as more of a commuter school, now nearly 60 percent of the incoming class will be residential students. Not only does this bolster the overall campus experience; it also continues to strengthen the direct economic impact on New Rochelle, Westchester County and New York State.

Iona officially changed its status from college to university on July 1, 2022, reflecting the growth of its academic programs and the prestige of an Iona education.

BOMA Westchester is an affiliate of BOMA International, the oldest and largest office building industry association with over 17,000 members who own or manage 9 billion square feet of commercial properties in North America and abroad.

A school on the rise, Iona officially changed its status from College to University on July 1, 2022, reflecting the growth of its academic programs and the prestige of an Iona education.

Iona University Announces Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Admired scholar and innovator in student success, Tricia Mulligan, Ph.D., will serve as Iona’s chief academic officer

 February 16, 2023

NEW ROCHELLE & BRONXVILLE, N.Y. — Following an international search, Iona University today announced the appointment of Tricia Mulligan, Ph.D., as provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs. Mulligan’s appointment is effective Feb. 27, 2023.

Joining Iona in September 2002, Mulligan’s first role was assistant professor of political science and international studies. She rose through the ranks, becoming the inaugural associate provost for strategic academic initiatives in 2015, and then the inaugural vice provost in 2021. Mulligan continued to build on Iona’s student recruitment and retention efforts, faculty support and academic growth, and in 2022, was appointed interim provost. In this role, she has been responsible for the annual academic budget and over 400 employees.

“Tricia has been an invaluable member of the Iona community over the years,” said President Seamus Carey, Ph.D. “Her leadership and guidance have been key in Iona’s continued success. We are thrilled to officially welcome her as our new provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs, where she will continue driving the academic momentum at Iona. Thank you to our search committee and all involved in the search process.”

Among her many accomplishments, Mulligan spearheaded several initiatives to support student success campuswide. Notably, she secured over $3.56 million in grants for academic and student support programs, such as the federal TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) and McNair programs. She also co-created the MOSAIC mentorship program, developing a sense of community for students from diverse backgrounds; launched Iona’s first honors task force to reimagine the honors curriculum; created the role of the interim provost for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging; developed new undergraduate and graduate programs to help meet market and employment demands; and implemented Gaels360, a software tool used as an early alert system to identify potential at-risk students and facilitate support and intervention.

Moreover, Mulligan consistently championed faculty development and support. She facilitated faculty development funding proposals and awards each semester; developed a streamlined process for faculty to propose new projects; and closely collaborated with campus partners during the COVID-19 pandemic, pivoting students to hybrid, mixed-mode and remote learning. All the while, Mulligan maintained various faculty positions, teaching courses in political science, Iona’s Columba Cornerstone class, and more.

“I am honored to serve as Iona’s new chief academic officer,” Mulligan said. “Iona is my home, and I consider the chance to engage with students as they develop their own individual pathways to be a great privilege and sacred responsibility. I am excited to be leading, collaborating and partnering with such a dedicated, motivated and caring community of faculty and staff as we continue to elevate the Iona experience for all.”

Widely celebrated in academia, Mulligan has received several awards including the Dr. Carol S. Russett Award from the New York State American Council on Education/Network of Women Leaders in Higher Education; the Exceptional Educator and Community Leadership Award from the Huguenot and New Rochelle Historical Association; and many more. She also served as a board member of Edmund Rice International, which works in partnership with other faith-based groups on the promotion of peace and justice around the world.

She received her Bachelor of Arts in political science and Spanish from the College of the Holy Cross, Master of Science in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Ph.D. in political science from George Washington University.

New Rochelle & Bronxville, N.Y. – Iona University President Seamus Carey, Ph.D., is pleased to announce that Iona has won the 2023 Business Council of Westchester (BCW) Hall of Fame Award for Corporate Citizenship. The BCW will induct Iona into its Hall of Fame on April 25, 2023, during a ceremony at Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle.

“It is an honor to win the BCW Hall of Fame Award for Corporate Citizenship, as I believe it reflects the real difference our students, faculty, staff and the University as a whole are making in the world around us,” Carey said. “Thank you to everyone at the Business Council of Westchester for your partnership. We look forward to building upon this collaboration for years to come.”

Each year, the BCW recognizes leaders across various areas of impact, including corporate citizenship, entrepreneurial business success, family business success, minority business success, small business success, women in business success and the chairman’s recognition award. This year’s class of inductees joins more than 100 past winners, representing the most prestigious business leaders and organizations in the proud legacy of Westchester County. Learn more about attending and supporting the event here.

“The selection process for the Hall of Fame Awards is always incredibly selective, but this year, Iona University stood out for its commitment to bold leadership, service and partnership on behalf of Westchester County,” said Marsha Gordon, president and CEO of the BCW. “We are so pleased to award this year’s Corporate Citizenship Award to Iona and induct the University into our illustrious Hall of Fame. Congratulations, Iona!”

MISSION & MOMENTUM

Founded in 1940, Iona was built upon a mission of fostering economic opportunity for its students and local communities. Today, Iona is widely recognized for its ability to deliver on this promise, offering an exciting range of both undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

From education to entrepreneurship, criminal justice to health sciences, accelerated nursing to an online MBA, Iona’s programs are geared toward practical, experiential learning that prepare graduates to excel in the workforce. Notably, Iona is ranked in the top 4 percent nationwide for the highest return on investment both 30 and 40 years after graduation, according to Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce.

An anomaly in higher education, Iona has grown new student enrollment more than 30 percent over the past three years despite the headwinds of the pandemic.

Building on that momentum and demand, Iona nearly doubled its footprint in May 2021 by acquiring the 28-acre campus of Concordia College in nearby Bronxville, N.Y. Soon thereafter, Iona announced the creation of the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences with a $20 million gift from one of the nation’s top hospitals. Earlier this month, Iona opened the school’s new state-of-the-art flagship building, the Kelly Center for Health Sciences, named after benefactors Alfred F. Kelly Jr. ’80, ’81MBA, ’19H, chairman and chief executive officer of Visa, and Peggy Kelly ’81, ’84MBA, who generously gifted $5 million to name the building.

Iona officially changed its status from College to University on July 1, 2022. The change not only reflects the prestige of an Iona education, but also the growth of its academic programs across three schools – the School of Arts & Science, LaPenta School of Business and the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Health Sciences – as well as the Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

“The momentum at Iona continues to rise,” Carey said. “We set out on a path of innovation and now the energy is palpable all across our two campuses.”

PARTNERSHIP & SERVICE

Guided by a brand promise to “Learn Outside the Lines,” Iona launched several impactful new initiatives in partnership with the BCW this past year.

First, through the Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Iona students partnered with the BCW and the City of Mount Vernon to help minority- and women-owned businesses bid on government contracts and grow their businesses. Next, the partnership extended to the City of Yonkers, where Iona students and the BCW worked with the Yonkers Housing Authority and Groundwork Hudson Valley to address the perils of “heat islands” in municipal housing. Most recently, Iona and the BCW announced a partnership to help develop the Westchester Innovation Network (WIN) Implementation Guide, a roadmap for transforming Westchester into a hotspot that attracts and nurtures innovative companies.

These examples are just a few of the countless collaborations happening inside and outside the classroom every day at Iona in service to the community. Iona students complete a remarkable 80,000 hours of community service each year, consistent with the mission of service, opportunity and the liberating power of education that inspires the Iona experience.

“To everyone at Iona who provides invaluable learning opportunities for our students by going beyond the classroom and collaborating with local businesses, communities, nonprofits and individuals, I want to say thank you,” Carey said. “Guided by the legacy of St. Columba, Blessed Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers, we at Iona know our greatest aim is in service to others. It is a great privilege to be called to do this work, and an honor to be recognized for it.”
