NEW ROCHELLE & BRONXVILLE, N.Y. — Iona University is proud to announce its new Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) master’s degree program will launch Fall 2026, expanding graduate study within the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Nursing & Health Sciences while helping to meet a growing workforce need.

“Launching the Family Nurse Practitioner program is a natural next step for Iona,” said Kavita Dhanwada, Ph.D., founding dean of the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Nursing & Health Sciences. “We have built a strong foundation in undergraduate and graduate nursing, and this new program extends that strength into advanced practice nursing, a high-demand area.”

According to the New York State Department of Labor, employment for family nurse practitioners is projected to grow 26 percent between 2022 and 2032, with approximately 440 job openings annually. Nationwide, the rate of growth is even higher.

Applications are now open. Learn more or contact Daniel Gallagher, director of Graduate Admissions for the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Nursing & Health Sciences, at dgallagher@iona.edu or (914) 637-7770.

About the Program

At Iona, students gain hands-on experience working with patients across the lifespan—from pediatrics to geriatrics—while learning from expert faculty dedicated to mentorship and real-world application. Small class sizes, personalized support, and strong clinical partnerships ensure every student is prepared to deliver compassionate, high-quality care in diverse settings. Graduates emerge confident, credentialed and ready to meet the growing demand for primary care providers—making a lasting difference in their communities.

The 44-credit FNP curriculum can be completed in 8 to 10 semesters and will be delivered in a flexible hybrid format, making this program ideal for working nurses. Iona’s 28-acre Bronxville campus, located just 20 miles north of New York City, is home to the Kelly Center for Health Sciences, where modern classrooms, simulation labs and virtual reality suites provide immersive, real-world health care training.

Notably, students will also complete 800 direct patient practice hours at some of the region’s premier sites. The clinical placements typically occur in primary care environments such as family practice clinics, community health centers, internal medicine and pediatric offices, urgent care centers, and women’s health practices. Under the guidance of qualified preceptors, students develop the necessary knowledge and competencies to diagnose and manage acute and chronic conditions and to promote health and wellness across the lifespan.

Iona’s nursing students also have an opportunity to participate in global practicum immersions that broaden their worldview while deepening their understanding of global health, diversity, social justice, and nursing practice in the U.S. and abroad. Students may complete faculty-supervised practicum hours alongside international nurses in Ghana or Ireland, gaining hands-on experience, engaging in service-learning and immersing themselves in the host country’s culture.

“With hands-on learning in the Kelly Center for Health Sciences, a flexible hybrid format, and extensive practicum experience, we are preparing nurses to advance their careers and help improve health outcomes across our communities,” said Sherylyn Watson, Ph.D., MSN, RN, CNE, director of Nursing. “Iona students are very dedicated and compassionate. This is going to be a rigorous program, but the outcome is that they will have a chance in their personal and professional lives to advance their careers and continue to make a real impact in the field.”

The Momentum Continues

Since launching in 2020, Iona’s nursing programs have experienced strong momentum not only in enrollment, but most importantly, in student outcomes. In 2025, the University renamed the school the NewYork-Presbyterian Iona School of Nursing & Health Sciences to reflect the growth and impact of its nursing programs.

Iona offers a suite of accredited undergraduate and graduate nursing programs, including a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing; Accelerated Second-Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing; Master of Science in Nursing Education; and Master of Science in Nursing Healthcare Organizational Leadership. Iona’s health science programs are designed to offer a holistic, well-rounded view of care, driven by Iona’s Interprofessional Education (IPE) experiences including students and professionals from Communication Sciences & Disorders, Marriage & Family Therapy, Mental Health Counseling, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, School Psychology and Social Work.

At the baccalaureate level, students graduate prepared to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

Impressively, 91 percent of May 2025 graduates in Iona’s traditional, four-year bachelor’s degree program and 92 percent of the January 2026 ABSN graduates passed the NCLEX their first time sitting for the exam, both exceeding the national average. In addition, 100 percent of Iona’s undergraduate nursing students are employed within a year.

Graduates of the FNP program will be eligible to sit for national certification exams through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

 February 11, 2026

NEW ROCHELLE & BRONXVILLE, N.Y. — As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms the economic landscape and the future of work, Iona University today announced a bold new summer program designed to place students at the intersection of education, industry and technological innovation as they prepare for evolving workplaces.

Education in Real Life reflects the vision of Iona President Seamus Carey, Ph.D., and builds upon Iona’s mission of meeting modern-day challenges while remaining anchored in its foundational commitment of providing a transformative educational experience.

Set to launch this May, the four-week program will engage with three critical industries: energy, construction and hospitality. Students will simultaneously study texts that provide context and meaning to the human experience as expressed through these fields.

“It is no secret that AI is having a profound effect on the workplace across nearly every sector of the economy, changing both the prospect of work and perhaps even its meaning, for the future our students will live in. The best way to ask questions about what’s ahead is to start with what leaders in key sectors are already doing, and how they see the technology influencing their operations and opportunities,” Carey said. “Education in Real Life starts there, while remaining rooted in our commitment to an education that deepens the capacities of human understanding and purpose. At Iona, we see artificial intelligence as a partner to the real intelligence education fosters—and that the real world demands.”

Applications to join the inaugural cohort are now open. The program will welcome 20 first- and second-year college students, each of whom will receive a $1,000 stipend and three (3) free credits as part of this innovative learning experience. Learn more and apply at iona.edu today.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Through coursework, conversation with industry leaders, small-group activities and site visits, students will examine how AI and other digital technologies are rapidly reshaping planning, performance and workforce needs. At the same time, students will connect industry knowledge with the reading of texts relevant to the themes raised by consideration of energy, building, hospitality, and the world they shape.

The first group of industry partners includes Eos Energy Enterprises; Consigli Construction Co., Inc.; Union Square Hospitality Group; Wyndham Hotels and Resorts; and legendary Westchester restaurateur John Crabtree. Working alongside Iona faculty, these partners will be central to Education in Real Life, allowing participating students to:

Explore real industries to understand their core demands and objectives as well as how AI can reconfigure strategy, systems and operations.

Engage directly with industry professionals and faculty mentors, gaining clarity on the evolution of industries and the jobs that support them.

Examine real-world career journeys and opportunities.

Connect reading and reflection to the pursuit of personal and professional goals, linking lessons with technical and professional experience.

“I want to express my gratitude to our partners for their willingness to contribute to our important and exciting experiment,” Carey said. “They are on the front lines of workforce transformation, just as our faculty are on the front lines of educational transformation. This program will no doubt serve as a catalyst for future innovation at Iona. My hope is that it will also offer a model for how the world of study and the world of work can engage in richer conversation through human connection as well as technology.”

Education in Real Life reinforces Iona’s mission to prepare students who are not only fluent in emerging technologies like AI but are also grounded in ethics, creativity and human understanding.

New Rochelle, N.Y. — Iona University recognized its 2025-26 cohort of University Innovation Fellows (UIF) during its annual pinning ceremony on Friday, Jan. 23, at the Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, celebrating students committed to driving positive change on campus and beyond.

Hosted through the University of Twente in Enschede, Netherlands, the UIF program brings together student leaders from institutions around the world to develop the skills, mindset and networks needed to identify challenges and create meaningful solutions within their university communities. This year, four Iona students were selected, and completed, the program as a cohort: Adrian Vazquez ’27, Jack Kinas ’27, Aidan Rodriquez ’26 and Daniel Lima ’26.

For newly pinned fellow Vazquez — a criminal justice major with a minor in sociology — the program marked a turning point in how he approaches leadership and problem-solving.

“UIF transformed my mindset from a static one to a dynamic one,” Vazquez said. “I looked at every opportunity, and I saw not a problem, but an opportunity for change.”

When reflecting on the conversations and solutions formed within his cohort, Vazquez underscored the importance of student engagement in sustaining Iona’s close-knit campus culture.

“Iona is a very tight-knit community,” Vazquez said. “To maintain that community, you need students who are passionate, and the biggest way to create passion is through involvement.”

Faculty leaders at the Hynes Institute echoed that UIF’s impact extends beyond technology or startups, focusing instead on people and purpose.

“Everybody thinks innovation is technology, but the reality is, what is the humanity behind innovation?” said Lendynette Pacheco-Jorge, associate director of the Hynes Institute and a UIF Faculty Innovation Fellow. “That is what we bring to the forefront. It is not just about teaching students to be change makers; we must be change- makers ourselves.”

Christoph Winkler, founding program director of the Hynes Institute and a UIF Faculty Innovation Fellow, noted that the program’s strength lies in its global reach and student-driven approach.

“The University Innovation Fellows Program brings together student innovators from across the globe to become change agents on their respective campuses,” Winkler said.

Through UIF, Iona’s student fellows collaborate with peers worldwide while working to better understand the needs of their own campus community, an experience Vazquez described as both empowering and personal.

New Book Series Brings the Spirit of Paine’s “Common Sense” and the Founding Era into the 21st Century

 July 14, 2025

Iona University is pleased to join The University of Virginia Press in announcing the launch of a new book series, “From Pamphlets to Podcasts: An Institute for Thomas Paine Studies Series.”

The series takes its cue from Thomas Paine, who wrote that “America … replenished the world with more useful knowledge and sounder maxims of civil government” than any other society. Books in this series will advance a new and innovative approach to scholarship on the contests over knowledge making and the pursuit of informed, democratic citizenship in Thomas Paine’s time, and about these processes’ relevance to our own.

Drs. Nora Slonimsky and Mark Boonshoft will oversee this new publishing venture, which –in collaboration with the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies (ITPS) at Iona University and generous support made possible by the Lapidus Initiative for Early American Inquiry – will provide space for emerging and established scholars alike to produce books that historicize concepts of expertise, propaganda, and information politics in democratic societies, and as such provide a much needed historical grounding for readers to understand our contemporary world of digital communication, misinformation, and heightened political polarization.

“I am thrilled at the unique opportunity presented by this wonderful partnership between the ITPS and the University of Virginia Press, a joint effort that marks the first university press series supported by Iona. ‘From Pamphlets to Podcasts’ will contribute not only the timely and important study of history of knowledge production and communication past and present, but will also facilitate the creation of new knowledge, related to countless interdisciplinary fields and audiences, inside and outside academia,” said Tricia Mulligan, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Iona University.

Added Sid Lapidus: “‘From Pamphlets to Podcasts: An Institute for Thomas Paine Studies Series’ is an important cornerstone of our efforts with Dr. Slonimsky, Dr. Mulligan, Mr. Grant, and Iona University leadership to support and expand the ITPS, and to foster scholarship and learning about Paine and the ideas he himself studied and valued. I’m delighted by this collaboration between the University of Virginia Press and the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies, and look forward to the exciting new publications it will produce.”

The editors seek books that interrogate both the medium and the message when they consider the broader relationship between an informed citizenry and its multiple – at times contradictory – meanings to the functioning of a republican government and society.

As Mark Boonshoft put it, “‘From Pamphlets to Podcasts’ will offer a venue for scholars to explore the changing meanings of and contests over informed citizenship in American history. As the title suggests, innovations in media technology and methods of communication have long conditioned democratic citizenship. We look forward to working with scholars from a range of disciplines working on these timely issues.”

Nora Slonimsky concurred and added, “For some time, the ITPS has considered how best to take Thomas Paine’s principles, amongst which included accessible communication, thoughtful connections between the past and present, and the importance of learning and knowledge to everyone, regardless of their background, and put them into practice. Thanks to this opportunity with UVA Press, Dr. Zimmerli, and Dr. Boonshoft along with the sponsorship of Sid Lapidus, we have the chance to consider these ideas in real time, supporting tremendous scholars from multiple disciplinary and methodological vantages that help us to more fully understand the relationship between American civic life and institutions, mediums, and modes of expression.”

This new series’ first title will be Derek Kane O’Leary’s “Archival Communities: Constructing the Past in the Early United States,” followed by George Oberle’s “Creating an Informed Citizenry: Knowledge and Democracy in the Early American Republic.”

Per Eric Brandt, director of UVA Press, “Thomas Paine’s writings such as ‘The American Crisis’ inspired a revolution grounded in the highest democratic ideals. Now, more than ever, we need to be reminded of those ideals. The press of the university founded by Thomas Jefferson, another architect of American democracy, is proud to be the publishing home for this exciting new series from Iona’s Institute for Thomas Paine Studies.”

Learn more about the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies

About the Series Editors

Mark Boonshoft is Associate Professor and Conrad M. Hall ’65 Chair in American Constitutional History at Virginia Military Institute. After receiving his Ph.D. from Ohio State University (2015), he was a post-doctoral fellow in the New York Public Library’s manuscripts division, where he worked on the Early American Manuscripts Project, a large-scale digitization and DH project. Dr. Boonshoft taught at a number of universities before arriving at VMI, and was formerly the first full-time Executive Director of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies. His first book, “Aristocratic Education and the Making of the American Republic,” was published by the University of North Carolina Press in fall 2020 and was a finalist for the 2021 George Washington Book Prize.

Nora Slonimsky is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of History at Iona University, where she is also the Director of the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies (ITPS). She has held service positions with the Society for the History of the Early American Republic (SHEAR), the Organization of American Historians (OAH), and the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing (SHARP). She is the author of the forthcoming “The Engine of Free Expression: Copyrighting the State in Early America,” winner of the SHEAR best manuscript prize and to be published by the University of Pennsylvania Press, and co-editor of “American Revolutions in the Digital Age.” For more about her work, please see her personal website, www.hamiltonsolo.com.

At UVA Press, Editor in Chief Nadine Zimmerli will work with Drs. Slonimsky and Boonshoft on bringing into print the best scholarship on the ways in which the role of an informed citizenry in democratic governance has been envisioned and has evolved since Thomas Paine published his pamphlet “Common Sense” in 1776.

New Rochelle, N.Y. - Iona University recently welcomed undergraduate and graduate students from across the tri-state region for a daylong academic conference focused on historical research, teaching and scholarship.

The event featured student-led presentations on a wide range of historical topics and concluded with a faculty roundtable exploring the role of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in historical research and teaching.

“My colleague Jimena Perry and I were thrilled to host the Phi Alpha Theta NY-NJ Regional conference at Iona on behalf of the History Department and the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies,” said Dr. Michael J. Hughes, associate professor of Modern European History. “The students and faculty who attended got a chance to learn about the fantastic historical research that talented college students from all over New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut are doing. I was incredibly impressed by the quality and sophistication of the paper presentations that I saw, and there was a palpable sense of excitement about the enthusiasm for history that the participants displayed.”

Over the course of four panel sessions, chaired by faculty from participating institutions, students engaged in meaningful academic dialogue and received feedback from seasoned historians.

Kaitlyn Incandela ’24, ’26MST, a graduate student, recently presented her research at the conference thanks to the support of Dr. Hughes, titled, “Weaponizing Femininity: The Strategic Use of Women and Female Stereotypes for Espionage During World War II.”

“Presenting in front of students and faculty from other colleges was an exciting challenge,” said Incandela. “My biggest takeaway was that history is full of fascinating, complex human stories. I loved exploring the different dimensions of the human experience through this conference.”

The conference concluded with a dynamic roundtable symposium titled "Generative AI in Historical Research and Teaching." Faculty speakers explored the implications of artificial intelligence for the discipline of history, sparking thoughtful discussion on both the potential and limitations of AI as a tool for research, pedagogy and public history.

The daylong event was co-sponsored by the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies and the Lapidus Initiative for Early American Inquiry and held in the LaPenta School of Business.

“It’s very important for Iona students to acquire practical skills and experience for their future careers. One of the reasons that we wanted to host the conference was to provide our students the opportunity to do just this. And the Gaels who presented papers at the conference made us proud,” said Hughes.

To learn more about the conference, please visit here.

 April 29, 2025

New Rochelle N.Y. - Iona University proudly marked a major milestone in its ongoing commitment to Catholic education, academic excellence and student success as it celebrated a year of transformative impact through the Gabelli Center for Teaching and Learning (GCTL).

Established through the generosity of Marc Gabelli and the EMG Madonna Foundation in April 2024, the Gabelli Center exemplifies Iona’s enduring commitment to providing a transformative educational experience as inspired by the legacy of Blessed Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers.

“Through the Gabelli Center for Teaching & Learning and the initiatives we are advancing among our faculty, students and community partners, Iona remains at the forefront of providing a transformative education inspired by our core values,” said President Seamus Carey, Ph.D. “The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence compels us to reexamine how we teach and learn, presenting an extraordinary opportunity for educators to engage students even more deeply as we prepare them for lives of professional achievement, meaning and purpose.”

With its new home located in a central location on Iona’s New Rochelle campus, adjacent to Ryan Library, the newly renovated 1,400 square-foot Gabelli Center serves as a physical and intellectual catalyst for collaboration, creativity and cutting-edge pedagogy.

Iona looks forward to hosting an official ribbon cutting for the new space this fall, which will coincide with Iona’s “AI in Education Conference” planned for educators across the region.

“This new space stands as a vibrant testament to the incredible support of the Gabelli Family. The Center has allowed us to engage in and accomplish so much important work over the past year,” said Tricia Mulligan, Ph.D., provost & senior vice president for Academic Affairs. “It has created the kind of environment where faculty can engage deeply with ideas, with one another, and with the resources they need in order to lead and serve as the most excellent of educators.”

A Year of Transformative Impact

Over the past year, the Gabelli Center has executed several strategic, multifaceted programs that embody Iona’s forward-thinking approach to education.
